This is a simple and versatile recipe that is really easy to put together! It's a great way to use our juicy and aromatic ground beef. It can be served as an appetizer with bread, crackers, and/or some veggies or you can even serve it as a main dish with a side salad!
To make this recipe even easier, you can simply top the beef onto some store-bought hummus!
The use of the pomegranate and mint really do add brightness and balance out the flavors of the beef and hummus really well. But if you don't have those ingredients, they are optional and you can omit them! Or get creative and come up with your own combination of seasoning and toppings!

Ingredients
For the Beef:
- 1 lb Berkeley Beef ground beef
- 1 brown onion, finely diced
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- salt to taste up to 1 tsp
- 2-3 tbsp molasses (don't worry, the sweetness will be subtle and a great balance to the other flavors!)
For the hummus:
- 1 (400g) cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained
- 2/3 cup tahini
- 1 large lemon, juiced
- 5-10 cloves of garlic, to taste
- Up to 1 cup of olive oil
To serve (all optional):
- pomegranate seeds
- mint leaves, finely chopped (you can substitute this with your favorite fresh herb like parsley!)
- pita bread, veggies, crackers, etc.
You can also consider topping this with lightly toasted pine nuts
Instructions
1) Heat a large non-stick pan on high heat, then add the oil and onions. Sauté the onions until golden brown. Add the spices and stir them evenly throughout the onions then continue to sauté for about a minute stirring constantly, until fragrant.
2) Add the ground beef and break it up and mix it into the spices and onion evenly to coat the beef. Stir every minute until the beef is brown and caramelized. This should take approximately 12-15 minutes. You may adjust the seasoning to taste.
3) Meanwhile, add all of the hummus ingredients except for the olive oil into a food processor.
4) Begin to drizzle the olive oil into the food processor while blitzing the hummus ingredients on high until the desired consistency is achieved.
4) Once the beef is done, add the molasses and mix it throughout the seasoned meat. Let it cook together for another minute.
4) To serve, place a pool of hummus on a plate or low bowl, and spoon a pile of beef on top. Sprinkle the pomegranate, herbs, and a drizzle of olive oil. Serve with toasted pita bread, crackers, or veggies.
